"I've never hit a thing in my life" — and 6 other doubts Austin beginners bring to the mats
Walking into a martial arts gym for the first time can feel incredibly intimidating. We sat down with our coaching staff to answer the raw, unfiltered questions Austin beginners ask before they take their first steps onto the mats at Unity Combat Club.
Walking into a martial arts gym for the first time is a weird mental hurdle.
You want the conditioning, the focus, and the real-world skills. But there’s a quiet, annoying voice in your head saying: "Everyone in there is going to look like a professional fighter, and I am going to end up looking like a human punching bag."
At Unity Combat Club, we hear these worries every single day from our Austin neighbors. We don’t believe in the flashy, cardio-kickboxing trends designed to keep you sweating but learning absolutely nothing. We believe in technique over trends.
To strip away the mystery, we sat down and compiled the most common, unfiltered questions people ask before booking their first 60 minutes with us. No sugarcoating, no corporate speak—just real talk from our coaching team.
1. "Do I need to be in shape before I start training?"
This is the ultimate paradox of combat sports, and it's the number one reason people delay starting. Let’s make this clear: You do not get in shape to train; you train to get in shape.
Show up exactly as you are. Whether you're coming off a long couch-bound winter or just looking to swap your boring gym routine for something with real purpose, our coaches scale the intensity. Classes like Muay Thai or Boxing are naturally high-yield workouts because true combat movement requires your entire body to work as one cohesive unit. Your cardiovascular endurance, core strength, and mobility will build naturally as you master the footwork.
2. "Am I going to get punched in the face on day one?"
Absolutely not. We do not toss beginners into a high-intensity fire to see who survives.
At Unity, we practice controlled, technical sparring. If you are in our Boxing or Muay Thai programs, you will focus on precision pad work, partner drills, and defensive head movement long before you ever engage in active sparring. When technical sparring does happen, it is highly structured, strictly supervised, and executed at a fraction of full power. We train to build each other up, not to collect gym gym-trophies at a teammate’s expense.

3. "Why do beginners and advanced fighters train in the same classes?"
Almost every other MMA gym in the Austin area separates beginners into 'siloed' classes where they mostly kick the air or punch heavy bags while the 'real' fighters train in the back.
We think that’s a terrible way to learn. At Unity Combat Club, all levels train together.
Why? Because beginners progress exponentially faster when they are paired with, and surrounded by, experienced practitioners. When you watch an advanced boxer slip a jab or a seasoned Muay Thai stylist check a kick up close, those mechanics click faster than any basic explanation can teach you. Conversely, our advanced members refine their own fundamentals by breaking down movements and mentoring newer teammates. It keeps the ego out of the gym and builds a unified family.
4. "What should I expect during my very first 60-minute class?"
Walking in, you'll immediately notice our setup is clean, focused, and free of unnecessary fluff. Whether you booked a $25 Boxing or Muay Thai session, your hour looks like this:
- The Warm-Up (10-15 mins): Shadowboxing, footwork drills, and dynamic stretching to prime your muscles.
- Technical Instruction (20 mins): The coach breaks down a specific tool—like the mechanics of a proper Muay Thai roundhouse kick or the hip rotation of a boxing hook.
- Partner Drills (20 mins): You’ll pair up to practice the technique on pads or gloves, focusing entirely on precision and control.
- Conditioning & Cool Down (5 mins): A final burn to push your limits, followed by active recovery stretching.
5. "Is 'Kids Combat' just a glorified babysitting service?"
If you’ve looked around for youth activities near Austin, you’ve probably seen a lot of martial arts schools that feel like high-energy daycare centers. That is not us.
Our Kids Combat (60 minutes, $25) program is designed for kids ages 6 to 12. We offer age-appropriate coaching that respects their capability. We do not baby them; we treat them like young fighters in training because they are. Through structured Muay Thai and MMA fundamentals, we build real self-defense skills, discipline, and emotional resilience in a safe, incredibly supportive environment. They will sweat, they will learn to listen, and they will build confidence that carries over into their schoolwork and friendships.
6. "Will I stand out if I have absolutely zero athletic background?"
Everyone is hyper-focused on their own progression to judge yours. At our core, we honor technique over trends.
We don't care if you've never thrown a punch or can barely do a push-up. Our community values the courage it takes to step onto the mat and commit to learning a complex skill. If you are willing to leave your ego at the door, listen to coaches who have lived and fought in the ring, and put in the reps, you will fit in perfectly.
Make a Day of It on Austin's East Side
Our facility sits right in the creative heartbeat of East Austin. Turn your training slot into an entire weekend itinerary by pairing your sweat session with our favorite neighborhood spots.

After you've worked up a massive appetite on the mats, head over to De Nada Cantina for some of the best handmade tacos and house-pressed margaritas in the city. If you are looking for a lively patio vibe to cool down with friends, grab a craft sour beer just a few blocks away at Blue Owl Brewing.
